just saw a bit of them from outside a gate, couple old drunks/hippies dancing to them, described as “rock-soul-funk,” the Capoeira dancers were a lot more interesting

old blues jammers, they were good because they were old but they had a middle aged female on the Electric violin who was incredible, first it\”s an Electric violin and then she played it with these wails and whines that just don\”t normally come out of a violin

“live dub!,” my new favorite music, a DJ who was good and not too obtrusive

a bunch of old white guys acting like rastas and I loved them, mesmerizing happy drone bass of rock steady, “An all-star group of musicians that include founding members of Austin’s good vibes bands of the 80′s such as the Lotions, Pressure, Itex, and with a former Killer Bee or two thrown in as well” per website, two guitarists a saxophone a keyboard a drum, sweet smell of pot throughout, diverse crowd

July 15, 2007 — Charles Thibodeaux and the Bayou Cajun Band, Central Market, Austin, TX

one of the five bands that my upstairs Neighbor plays with, was surprised to be liking it as much as I did b/c expected zydeco but Neighbor clarified that it\”s traditional Cajun music rather than zydeco, he said that zydeco has traditionally been black music but that whites are opening their arms to it, all the guys are from Louisiana, there was Neighbor on drums, two on guitars and one on accordion, they sang in a French that sounded different – Neighbor said it was because it was Cajun, little kids loved them and were moved to dance – Neighbor said that bands with syncopation move the kids to dance but can\”t watch them or you lost your rhythm, it was a very happy environment

July 13, 2007: Marshall Ford Swing Band, Brentwood Tavern, Austin, TX

three guys and one thumping on an upright bass, pleasing, reminded me of The Weary Boys and South Austin Jug Band, old men in young bodies in the end

July 13, 2007: Terry Joyce and George Wallace — Ginny’s Little Longhorse Saloon, Austin, TX

plain old country, honky tonk probably, don\”t even remember them, Terry Joyce was right on the line between being a dwarf and being really short, Ginny and her daughter both emphasized that Terry WITH George was key for her to get booked at their bar

July 13, 2007: Chop Tops — Red 7, Austin, TX

rockabilly outfit from Santa Cruz, good but so much the same I think the time has come for me and this genre to part ways, did have one good surf guitar song, singer verged between social critique and ignorant obnoxiousness, spit at small crowd and tossed his drumstick at Rockboy but all in good fun you know , covered Stray Cats which confirmed their tired sameness in my book, highlight of the show was a fight between a girl in a polka-dotted dress and a girl with pink hair that matched her pink frothy dress

my disdain for genre/band is less an accurate perception and more a result of personal events that evening, Chop Tops is a good band

July 11, 2007: John Doe — Waterloo Records, Austin, TX

disappointing, so old and melodic, harmonizing with a woman seems to be his thing – she may have been Exene but I think/hope not, he was stirring when he first launched into his raucous/rockish country

only heard a few toots from the saxophone from him – took forever to get started and we had to leave, older black man with gold earrings – the real thing if you will
