May 22, 2004: Crust, Room 710, Austin TX

Crust: band formed from Bontempi Brothers-used to have following some ten years ago, seemingly gay middle-aged lead posed as reverend and praised country/Bush and asked up to open our hymnals, quality punk with lots of variety (I was enjoying until the beer struck me ill after three of them), threw bread at the crowd and all the cool boys lost their composure in the joy of throwing it back, lots of humor and lots of political statements, too much video nonsense behind them and to right of stage, eventually stripped to lingerie, GayBoy in typical GayBoy fashion denied that they were gay boys, they even had a dick song I believe, GayBoy has an interesting unique store of music knowledge-all old Austin with lots of Texas psychedelia, this was the end of our fated sexual encounter (I swore I’d have sex this weekend and he called out of the flaming blue late Sat and said others would be there and they weren’t and we were out til 4 and)

liked them better this time, no-talent does have some, skinny one is appealing in a Jason Fuller way

bluegrass, felt I’d seen them before most certainly, sound was awful-tinny and brassy-so unfair to judge them

from New York, two saxes, trumpet, bass and two other guitars, drummer, put on an excellent show, continual stream of mildly gimmicky stage moves, all instrumentalists were attractive and of undisclosed ethnic background (NY) but could have stood to appear to be enjoying themselves, lead singer was a short fury of a black woman who controlled all Al Green style, some politics, some fun, some sad, I loved the whole spectacle, the soul funk makes me want to dance harder “within myself” than any other kind of music, LameGuitarGuy turned up his nose and said that the vocalist eclipsed the musicians and that his funk band was more jazz than soul, white boy

70s funk DJs (they weren\”t seen but MyHero says there\”s usually a guy with mic on stage ripping on people in crowd), people love this stuff, it is a new resurgence or has forever been loved?

his friend from the Wednesday night dinner party, decidedly unpleasant looking girl (long natty curly brown hair and bushy eyebrows and ruddy glistening face) with a horribly cheesy grin, but great confident voice and decent guitar, I could be her

4 waxen willowy woozy boys, some combo of Collective Soul and Bob Schneider, easy listening radio music, I kind of liked them-refreshing after indie inundation

from Denton, annoyingly childish and 60s psychedelic, mix of James and the Beatles, could have grown to like them if they hadn’t had supremely distracting and annoying film footage playing behind them throughout their entire set, Chronicle says “indie space rockers”-I love the indie music nowadays

we liked them a lot, had the sonic background of my favorite instr rock genre but a lighter forefront, Chronicle describes as “dreamy dance” and BestFriendsExHusband describes as “spacey Guided by Voices”
