Tad was a wannabe Metallica act without any of the finesse that Metallica brings to their live act.

Concerts often make or break an artist for me, and my romance with Soundgarden and Chris Cornell ended on this day. The band isn’t entirely to blame for a lifeless set and two stinker opening acts; they also had the distinction in playing in one of the worst concert venues in existence. Sound is swallowed up in the open-air of the Greek Theatre and released well above the head of the audience, who squirm on wedges of concrete, struggling to hear the band. But it is notable that Soundgarden never varied their setlist on this tour, and then it was only to add in the occasional song to the set. They are hardly the only band to keep a standardized setlist during a given tour, but the band’s energy might have benefitted from some variety. Their act was stale and muted. The audience was pained and struggled to get into the vibe, after sitting through Eleven’s techno-jumble version of rock n roll and then Tad’s wannabe Metallica act without any of the finesse that Metallica brings to their live act. It sucked. I still have a place in my heart for the studio album Superunknown but we don’t visit very often.
