March 15, 2007–The Lonesome Spurs–Headhunters, Austin, TX

Posted by Dara on 15th March 2007 in Alt-Country, Americana

Winsome middle-aged rural Texas girl with all the spunk of her youth — very cute and knows it. Great full throaty voice. Played guitar and used a foot-pedal on a suitcase as the drum set. Creepy guitar partner with yellow hair and a red coat. Lonesome country and then rollicking country. Ended with a Cash Zeppelin medley.

honky tonk – we tried to define it apart from country and came up with twangy guitar, pedal steel guitar, Hawaiian guitar sounds (I say), and traditional uptight singing, I don’t much like the style but it strikes much nostalgia in Rockboy

had Erik Hokannen playing with him and it was delicious – dueling fiddle and guitar, Erik is crazy and wonderful, swing country eh but pleasure to watch their pleasure

October 25, 2005: Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Waterloo Records, Austin TX

Posted by Dara on 25th October 2005 in Americana

thought Rockboy might love them what with the Cash but they weren’t so Cash, laidback bad-boy country, I enjoyed them maybe more than Rockboy, and of course this one we were on time for

August 27, 2005: The Knitters, The Parish, Austin TX

all for Rockboy, $20, not worth that though it was a good show, John Doe and Exene from the 80s punk band X, they brought the country to X apparently and this is a two-album offshoot band that is more country than punk, cow-punk, both were great performers, used to be married

May 17, 2005: Billy Joe Shaver tribute, Waterloo Records, Austin TX

nice voice, Jimmie Del Gilmore was there and I told Rockboy again how much I like the look of him—good-soul type—Rockboy said he’s studied Eastern religion, Gilmore’s son was there too

April 24, 2005: Lubbock Calling, Threadgill’s, Austin TX

Lubbock Calling—a benefit for my neighbor Jesse who come-to-find-out is really a musician and is nearly famous (Jesse “Guitar” Taylor)—Crazy Neighbor used to wax rapturous about him but Crazy Neighbor was crazy—there was this car accident in front of our houses last night and Jesse’s woman and I were outside and she told me about Jesse’s benefit—the whole development was very exciting for me—he has played with a succession of musicians from The Flatlanders to the Sextons to Reckless Kelly and is sick with liver problems — oh and the scene was just crazy—old men with long hair and longer yellow teeth—kind of a crazy psychedelic cowboy scene—so west texas too but then old Austin—but the beauty was in how long these transplanted Lubbockians have known each other

wanted to not like them but it was great for that night, frumpy hip-void lead had a golden deep country voice, guy guitarists from New Orleans, played country classics and originals

July 20, 2004: Susan Gibson and friends, Cactus Cafe, Austin TX

Posted by Dara on 20th July 2004 in Americana, Folk, Singer/Songwriter

Susan wrote Wide Open Spaces for the Dixie Chicks, young-looking middle-aged long-haired gruff blonde, liked Shelly King who left early the best, obnoxious boy accompanying and dominating—standard sensistive singer/songwriter fluff, discovered that MandolinWoman calls s/s “folk,” discovered that I love Americana/country/whatever to the extent that it is driving music, I like the peoples’ chords too, thus there was Tom Petty, I am aware this is despicable

June 8, 2004: Redd Volkaert, Ego’s, Austin TX

shameful repetition, new insights from MandolinWoman’s expertise: all old country covers, Redd is as respected as purported—MandolinWoman says partly because a super one who has actually endured

really like his voice three times over—heard him on radio before concert and esp liked the voice and was pleased to hear going to be at festival—liked it at the festival even while thinking he was Bob Schneider entire time—heard him this morning on the radio and loved the song and the voice and was thinking it was Grateful Dead or Onus B Johnson—but it was him…all three times, show was a little Buffett-like silly and party-style, very very funny on stage though, will buy him

tech excellence—pleasing in ones so young and apparently socially normal, boring and without soul

Posted by Dara on 25th March 2003 in Americana, Bluegrass

Blah and Blah who are friends with Blah who is Blah’s TA, thought they were amazing at the party, she plays violin/guitar, he plays mandolin/guitar/etc, but in formal setting they were disappointing, flat and muted, average vocals, nice interesting people though, maybe just a start-up phase, old-timey bluegrassy bluesy stuff

5 guys with 2 guitars, 1 fiddle, 1 banjo and 1 massive bass, LOVED them, individually tight and fluid together, bluesgrass jam band that strayed into funk and “Friend of the Devil,” could have had more interplay on the stage with each other
